It’s a common misconception that fire glass is a standalone product. Fire glass in its own right has all the essential characteristics to offer fire resistance for a predetermined duration; however it must be installed as a component into an approved system to achieve a certified and usable application.
Each fire classification will demand its own requirement on the glass and system; therefore each total system must be certified for that application.
Fire glass should never be installed into an existing framing or door system to provide fire protection unless you are fully aware of the system’s characteristics and whether it is appropriate for the application. Simply replacing the glass in a window frame and expecting it to perform is simply not permitted.
With fire glass performing the vital function of protecting people and property, cutting corners is not acceptable. Each component should be examined to ensure the whole system is appropriate.
