King Abdullah Financial District, Saudi Arabia

Pyroguard fire safety glazing installed on prestigious Saudi Arabian project

The King Abdullah Financial District (KAFD) in Saudi Arabia was inspired by King Abdullah’s vision to create a new financial district that would take the economy of Riyadh to new heights.  Located in the heart of the Saudi capital, Riyadh, KAFD combines the worlds of business and lifestyle and sets a benchmark in urban living, smart city technologies and sustainable development. Spanning 1.6 million square metres, Saudi Arabia’s first vertical city is home to 95 buildings, featuring Grade A office spaces, upscale residences, diverse commercial and retail areas and luxury hospitality and entertainment venues, all interconnected and walkable within 10 minutes.

As part of the KAFD, an innovative Monorail system is set to offer the very latest method of pedestrian movement within the district.  The elevated Monorail spans 3.6 km with six trains and features a driverless autopilot operation.  The Monorail, which is expected to handle up to 3,500 passengers per hour during peak times, seamlessly connects with the Riyadh Metro, making transfers smooth with enhanced accessibility throughout the city.

The Challenge

The project required critical protective glazing to provide a safe egress route for the high volume of passengers from the car parking area in King Abdullah Financial District to the monorail.

Strict project timescales meant that the fire safety glazing supplier needed to be able to meet a tight delivery schedule whilst complying with the complex safety, thermal and aesthetics of the project.

The solution

With over 40 years’ experience in the manufacture of fire safety glazing, which have supplied some of the world’s most prestigious commercial developments, Pyroguard was able to meet the exacting requirements of the project.

Pyroguard collaborated closely with specialist glazing contractor Isotech, to ensure the project could meet its delivery deadlines.

Pyroguard T EW120/13-1 fire safety glazed units, with 120 minutes fire protection were supplied and installed into Forster profile systems, compatible with EN Standards and Saudi Civil Defence Regulations.

As Pyroguard has secured Intertek certification for a wide range of its fire-rated glazing systems including the glazed units specified on this project, this means the company was able to align with all relevant legislation.
